Overview of the Faculty

The Health & Physical Education Disciplines under the new Victorian Education Learning Standards (VELS) encompasses a broad and balanced range of programs at Berwick Secondary College. These include Physical Education, Health, Outdoor Education, Sport Education and Interschool Sport.

Junior School

Physical Education is compulsory in Year 7, 8 & 9. In Year 7 we run a Fundamental Motor Skills Program continuing the developmental skills of Striking, Kicking, Throwing & Catching. This is expanded in Year 8 to develop the principles of game skills and tactics. In addition to the core games skills both Year 7 & 8 cover Athletics, Gymnastics and Fitness.

Sport Education

Sport Education is part of the Physical Education Program in Year 7 & 8 and is run as an Inter-form competition covering Athletics, Cross Country, Winter and Summer Sports. The aim being to develop the competitive aspects of those sports covered in Physical Education. The Year 7 program also includes a 4 week swimming course.

 

The Year 9 program allows students the opportunity to select electives that are suited to their interests and include Outdoor Education, Gymnastics, Football Codes of the World, Core Physical Education, Dance, Racquet Sports and Advance (Surf Rescue).

 

Health is compulsory in Year 7 & 8 with students completing the Health and Human Relations program.
Health is an elective in Year 9 with students covering Adolescence, Health & First Aid.

Senior School

Year 10 can select from: Individual Activities, Water Sports, Aerobics, Body & Soul, Core Physical Education, Super Fit and Gym Fit Programs.

 

Health is an elective in Year 10. The course is titled “The Game of Life” and is aimed at developing the life skills necessary for our rapidly changing society.

 

  • Physical Education Units 1 to 4 are offered as electives in VCE
  • Health Education Units 1 to 4 are offered as electives in VCE
  • Outdoor Education Units 1 to 4 are offered as electives in VCE
  • Interschool Sport Competitions: (VSSSA program)

The following sports are offered at Interschool Level:

  • Athletics
  • Swimming
  • Cross Country
  • Cycling
  • Badminton
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Soccer
  • Softball
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball

Training for these sports is run mainly at lunchtimes.

Athletics & Swimming – training is run mainly at lunchtimes, with some sports holding after school or evening training sessions.

Facilities

Berwick Secondary College is fortunate to have excellent facilities in Physical Education. The school and surrounding area include:

  • Double Court Basketball Stadium
  • Synthetic Hockey Pitch
  • 4 Outdoor Basketball Courts
  • Weight & Fitness Training Facilities

The college also has joint agreement to use:

  • Berwick Leisure Centre
  • Edwin Flack Athletics Track
  • Edwin Flack Football / Cricket Oval
  • Edwin Flack Netball Courts

Outdoor Education

The major focus of this unit is to provide an introduction to a range of activities that are conducted in the outdoors and thus foster an understanding of the skills, fitness, risks and responsibilities that are involved.


The unit is semester based and involves a number of extended sessions, half day and full day excursions. Activities include:

  • Snorkelling
  • Surfing
  • Windsurfing
  • Bushwalking/hiking
  • Survival skills
  • Orienteering
  • Rock climbing
  • First Aid
  • Overnight camping
  • Risk assessment
  • Minimum impact practices
  • Knots and gear

Assessment and Reporting

All courses delivered in the Junior School and those non VCE courses in the Senior school will be assessed and reported on in line with the new Victorian Educational Learning Standards.
