Our Humanities Courses

Our students are encouraged to travel through time and in virtual space, to become aware of their rights, the law, and their environment and to visit interesting locations. They sail with the Vikings, visit gaols and court rooms and investigate natural and human environments. They fight with the soldiers at Gallipoli, burn Viking ships for Uphellya, build castles, attend a medieval banquet, pan for gold at Sovereign Hill and become participants in the world of small business.

They view the art of the Middle Ages, learn about money and wealth, and try to understand the lives of the ancient Romans and Australia’s convicts. They study the natural environments of coasts, rainforests and deserts and the human environments of the local region as well as Melbourne. They understand that for anything to be sustainable, we must leave some of it for future generations. Through Civics they learn about government and about what they can do to change their world.

The Humanities Classroom

Students have access to computers, both in pods and in the library, for research and to attempt web quests. They learn the skills of research, they problem solve and work individually as well as in groups. Some classes will access the Flexible Learning Spaces and will work collaboratively on join projects with other class groups.

Many Humanities classes include fieldwork, excursions, guest speakers or school based out of class activities (such as a market day or a medieval banquet) as a part of their curriculum. We provide sets of text books for student use in class. Class work varies from written and oral tasks, to role plays and simulations, web quests, viewing films and film making. Students are encouraged to discuss issues, form opinions and to communicate this information clearly in a written and oral form.
