Principal's Message

Principal - Mr Ross Bevege

Welcome to the Berwick Secondary College website. Our school is committed to the promotion of excellence in education through the provision of opportunities for personal growth and achievement for each individual, in a safe and inclusive environment.

Berwick Secondary College aims to provide a learning community through:

EXCELLENCE IN LEARNING - "We strive to do our best, we consider new ideas and encourage best practice, and we select our learning opportunities."

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS - "We treat others with consideration and understanding, we are truthful and trustworthy, and we work with others."

PERSONAL GROWTH - "We meet our expectations, we are accountable for our actions and we work with effort, energy and persistence."

The goals of our College are as follows:

  • To improve student learning outcomes across all year levels.
  • To improve student engagement and wellbeing through an emphasis on teacher-student relationships.
  • To enhance student pathways and transition across all year levels.

The consistent implementation and application of our College values across all areas of our operations will be the means by which we will achieve our purpose and goals.

Berwick Secondary College is situated approximately 45 km south east of Melbourne on the outer limits of the metropolitan area, in a high growth corridor. The city of Casey has been one of the fastest growing cities in the country over the past 5 years. In February 2007, the college student numbers were 1505.

The 7 - 9 curriculum offered at the College is very broad and is in a period of transition as we move to embrace the introduction of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). The curriculum at these levels is designed to provide rich learning experiences in a wide range of areas, thereby preparing students to make objective decisions with regard to their studies in the Later Years of Schooling. The College offers an exceptionally wide range of programs in the Later Years (10, 11 and 12), catering for the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) as well as a wide range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects. The College also provides for students with special needs including programs for students with disabilities, as well as literacy and numeracy needs. A High Achievers program also operates in the school. Students at educational risk are also catered for with the BEST, Mentor and Go Girls programs.

The College is currently in the last year for both the Leading Schools Fund (LSF) and LOTE Centres for Excellence programs. The LSF program has a strong emphasis on utilizing ICT as an effective tool in the classroom. The LOTE Centre of Excellence is one of two operating in the State with the staff providing Professional Development services to other Victorian schools.

The College has a motivated and committed staff who are prepared to offer a wide range of extra

curricular activities. These include a wide variety of sports played at inter-school level, artistic performances (dance, drama, singing, school band, and contemporary music), rock eisteddfod, human powered vehicle, presentation ball, interstate and overseas tours and debating. There are a range of active student representative groups, generally elected by their peers.

The College has very large grounds and excellent facilities. Some of these facilities include; an automotive and technology centre, 8 flexible learning spaces, a performing arts centre, three gymnasiums, a VCE Centre, a synthetic hockey pitch, fitness centre and an athletics field. Some of these are shared facilities with the City of Casey .

The College also has well equipped computer facilities and a 1:5 computer-student ratio. It has begun to increase the range and use of technology including interactive whiteboards, multi media projectors, laptops etc. An ultranet program called E-workspace operates throughout the College.
